Ahal Region is one of five provinces of Turkmenistan. It is located in the south-center of the country. The region has a border with Afghanistan and Iran along the Kopet Dag Mountains. It cover the area of 97 160 km2 (37 510 sq mi). The population of the region is about 1 million. Inside the territory of the Ahal Region is the capital of Turkmenistan - Ashgabat, but it is an independent administrative unit.

The capital of Akhal velayat is Arkadag. The city is named after former President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, whose official nickname is Arkadag. Before December 20, 2022,the capital of the province was Anau, a city on the southeastern outskirts of Ashgabat. Another important city in this region is Tejen, which is located in the southeast near the border with Mary Province.

The official name of the region in Turkmen is Ahal welaýaty. The etymology of the name probably goes back to the Persian word آخال, which means "drainage ditch". Another version is that it was derived from the word ak [white, clean] and the addition of -al.

Ahal Province is subdivided into 7 districts:

  • Ak bugdaý (formerly Gäwers)
  • Babadaýhan (formerly Kirov)
  • Bäherden (formerly Baharly)
  • Gökdepe
  • Kaka
  • Sarahs
  • Tejen

The province included 9 cities, 9 towns, 82 rural or village councils, and 231 villages.
